In September 2013, it was confirmed that Samantha Ruth Prabhu was selected as the lead female lead. Bengali actor Tota Roy Chowdhury was signed for an antagonistic role, an international gangster named Vivek Banerjee. In March 2014, Murugadoss stated that Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh would be part of his project, making his Tamil film debut. He also told that Vijay would be seen in a double role. In an interview to the IANS, Mukesh said that his look in Johnny Gaddaar (2007) inspired him to do Kaththi and the he played an "extremely polished character" and not the stereotypical villain, who does not "fight the hero with physical power, but with intelligence". He learned Tamil for his role, as he did not want to speak his dialogues without understanding their meaning. He further revealed that he had lost weight for the role and that his character would be a foreign-returned one and his looks be "stylish" as Brad Pitt and David Beckham. Sathish was chosen to play a supporting role. Sayaji Shinde and Subbu Panchu were selected to play pivotal roles in the film.
